my mother's Audi 2006 A6 (4.2v8) died in the middle of the road. the power steering went out and a few second later the entire engine just shut down. no warning. no check engine lights. nothing. it won't start up (and the key won't even come out of the ignition). it was stuck in drive so i used the shift lever release to put it in neutral, but that didn't help. we engaged the parking break (which is done via a button) and now we can't release the parking break so we can't roll the car anywhere. i disconnected the battery to try to "reset" things, but to no avail. this is terrible, we're truly stuck!

anyone have any advice? my first priority is a way to override the electronic e-brake so that we can roll the thing away. obviously, if we could figure out how to start it that'd be great.

I am betting the main problem with the car is the starter control module. Here is an Audi TSB describing 90% of what you are experiencing.
