While much of the article in the link is regarding the next S4, there is a tidbit for fans of the A6.
"A less powerful, 290-hp, 310 lb-ft version of the engine will be the base offering in the A6 Quattro, replacing the 3.2-liter V-6. Known as TFSI, which in the past has been Audi's internal moniker for four-cylinder turbos, the new engine may be referred to as the 3.0T in the model name, possibly indicating a twin-charged system using both a supercharger and a turbocharger. While Volkswagen has a "twincharger," Audi has not yet offered such a system. At the very least, we expect the new V-6 to be supercharged, although what will allow the S4's version to generate 50 or so more horsepower is still a mystery."<ul><li><a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/car_shopping/latest_news_reviews/2010_audi_s4_to_get_supercharged_v6_updated_with_m ileage_estimates_car_news">read all the details here</a></li></ul>

Makes me wonder what is driving it....?
Superchargers can't be cheap, but maybe they can provide some of the power and economy of turbochargers but without opening the door to chip modification? I would think that a twin charger system would be to complex and expensive to build and maintain.

The TSI used in the Golf was to have a 1.4L engine perform like a 2.4, but with lower consumption and emissions.
Strange that the mention of the TSI is only for the A6 and not the S4, so the performance car only gets supercharging ??
Not sure where all of this is going.

Gas prices just have brought it home; the design cycles and planning are much longer than that. Of course C02 output and fuel input (...MPG) are directly coupled.
You'll be seeing more and more of this; remember Europe lives under the Kyoto accord already by and large. If you want a V10 or even a V8 (let alone a W12...) better think about getting it in the next few years w/ current body styles before it either outright disappears or becomes the domain of ultra exotics and exotics.

it will make for an interesting case when the time comes for the mrs's new car. we were thinking Q7 TDI, but i'll be waiting to see what mpg's this one makes. along with the sleek facelift the A6 will make a compelling option.

0-60 in eight seconds will be returning as a very, very fast car in 10 years.

as a turbo'd engine IIRC.
A lot of the MB guys with superchargers upgrade the pulley for decent power gain. So I guess chip and pulley would be the way to go for modifications.
I agree though, odd that Audi is going the way of superchargers...if it is true.
