r u some what techy ( done sw updates installs on ur comp, can follow screen menus, dont need assistance setting up wireless etc etc)

if u r not at all techy don't try it yourself
if u r somewhat techy it can be done

i would recommend

1. reading as much as u can about it on this forum and outline on paper ur steps before u actually do it and have instructions w the disks u get and use then during install

2. if u DIY... try to use original discs not burned? Burned copies work but sometimes they don't take original file right in copy process

3. feed 1 disc at a time (Glove Box not trunk... MAP disks go in trunk) using only slot cd1...*not cd1 in slot 1 cd2 in slot 2 cd3 in slot 3

3. power must NOT be interrupted during update process... plan to keep car running for 1 hour or 2..dont run out of gas... or u can get a battery maintainer

4. some versions may require inserting the SAME disk twice.. what i mean is sometimes a version update will need to do a few modules and one of those modules may require to be isolated. The install will essentially split that update into 2 or 3 steps. if it does u will need to insert same disk and it will do the remaining module(s). LOOK for "NOK" if at end of each module. if u get NOK then insert same disk again as it should retry that module. a proper install of each module will give u "OK" not "NOK" which means Not O K

5. version 2750 and below have to be upgraded to 3360 before upgrading to a higher version THIS APPLIES to u so u are essentially doing 2 updates so know what disks u need

from wikipedia

North America versions:
0600 (0.6.00) -
1190 (1.1.90) -
2750 (2.7.50) - version 2750 and below have to be upgraded to 3360 before upgrading to a higher version
3310 (3.3.10) -
3360 (3.3.60) - {Update CD p/n 4F0 906 961AB}
4140 (4.1.40) - {Update CD p/n 4L0 906 961 H}
4610 (4.6.10) - {Update CD set p/n 4F0 998 961}

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm very techie (programmer for a living, and was fully ASE certified at one time), so most things are not intimidating to me.

I can get the two disks from World Impex or genuineaudiparts.com. Dealer hasn't gotten back to me (yet) with what version they would update to for the 101 bucks, if they don't do the latest, I may just do it myself.

The _only_ thing that has me concerned is the possibility of 'bricking' the MMI unit, and thus the only reason I would have a dealer do it is that (presumably) they will accept the liability of bricking it and having to replace it on their own dime. Probably not even a good assumption, though, as previous experience with stealerships suggests that they would try and shift the blame to a 'pre-existing condition' of the MMI unit anyway, and want to make me pay, should _they_ brick it.

The two disks will cost about $15. If you have a battery charger connect it under the hood (not at the battery or you will brick the system when the power management systems shuts down the MMI after about 15 minutes). Put the first disk in CD changer slot 1 and follow the instructions you can find in this forum. What that is done insert the second disk and repeat. I was nervous about this also but the update to my 2006 went smoothly, took about 45 minutes for both updates.

Very important that you understand this little caveat..most so-called- updates are really only updates in the sense that your suppose to be 'improving' something..many people here found out the hard way (dealer and DIY) you can actually lose system components doing an upgrade and see virtually zero improvements although a few years ago one had to be done to update the Navteq..not an issues with you. If everything is working except a mechanical issue..my suggestion is don't do it unless it's imperative and then only by a very qualified MMI installer..not the fuel injection man.
Think what it takes to do a proper full OS install on your computer and how many things get twisted which you had on the old system!? BTW..I still like and use XP but have 7 on the NB.
Even fact trained 'technicians' screw up anything MMI related so its rare to find one who really understands the German (if yr car is the coveted German built Audi) software nuances unless they go to the special Audi dealer. Get this info from the audi clubs.

I did the update from 11.0 to 41.40 with no issues in less than an hour. I did not have a battery tender so I just let the car run. I'm a little techy and I had no issues and I'm very happy with the results.
