Anybody know why the names of cd tracks don't display on the MMI?
Also why do I have to manually name the CD Album title by editing it?
I have the MMI High on a UK 2007 A6 and I'm using original cds ranging from about 1990 to date. I have not yet tried any home-made cds.

by using the search forums feature in less time than it took you to post.
few original CDs have text to display at all, never mind track titles. You need to make your own. The feature is often called CD TEXT and is available in most CD burning programs known to exist, including iTunes.

So does that mean I'll have to re-burn all my original cds?
And why do all the track titles come up automatically on my pc from an original cd when played through windows media player?

Because every CD has a unique Identifier Number associated with it, and your PC will grab that number and connect to an Internet data-source to associate that number with cover art and track names.

Thanks for the explanation - simple really!
In that case I might as well stick with the AMI, which BTW is absolutely superb with my Ipod. All tracks, playlists artists etc come up on the MMI. The only reason for the enquiry about cd track titles was that if I or anyone in the family have a new cd they want to try they don't have to wait until I've put it into ITunes first.

the AMI uses ID3 tags to read the digital music (in MP3 form), while CD Text reads the digital music in essentially non-compressed (not MP3) form.

. . .MMI will display whatever is there. If it isn't there it won't display.
Insert David Gilmour's On an Island CD into your player -- it fully populates the screen with names and song titles, etc.
Most CD's don't do this.
It is not the fault of the MMI.
Most CD's that display the names on a PC have to derive the names, they are typically NOT on the CD, only running times are in the TOC for most CD's.

Two main reasons:
1 - Thieves;
2 - Heat (CD instructions clearly say not to expose them to extreme heat, and give the example inside a car);
One of these reasons is enough for me!
