My car says Oil Level Min. I never had this issue and always had the dealer do oil changes so I am lost. I checked the dipstick, it was burning hot and I think I burned myself touching it. The entire length has oil on it when it touch it. The tip with some min max had oil on it too. So I can I tell if I need oil can somoone help? I need synthetic 530 according to dealer. what kind can I put mobile oil, penzoil? etc. help please.

I've never done it on my Audi, but I imagine the procedure is same. First of all, make sure your engine is cool. Then take the dipstick out, wipe it off, then stick it in and take it out to see where the oil is. If it's below the minimum, you need oil.

While were on the subject, anybody notice that what audi has as the recommended capacity on the 05 A6 (8.1 quarts w filter change) is a bit too much. I put in 7 quarts and my dipstick reads above the max level.
Now I am thinking about draining a quart just to be on the safe side.

Apparently the min/max level on the dipstick only pertains to the top quart so even if you go below it you should be ok. I burn about a quart every 5k miles so I add 1/2-3/4 quart in between 5k intervals.

- make sure you are on a level surface.
- take dipstick out and wipe with clean cloth; notice at bottom of the stick there are two indicators (min and max)
- insert dip stick and take it out
- keep stick down i.e don't turn it upside down because the oil level will change then. check level of oil. If it is below the min, then you need oil.

Must have beemn looking at the 4.2 engine in my manual. Either way 6.9 qts still seems a bit high seeing as though I put in 7 quarts and am getting a reading over halfway above the max level. I am going to drain a quart to be on the safe side. Don't wanna ruin my catalitic converter.

8.1 quart is factory fill when new from the factory. All oil change after that should be 6.9 quart. Make sure you use oil which meets the VW 502 00 standards.

When the "low oil level" warning is displayed - you typically need to add 1/2 qt of oil. Mobil Synthetic 0W40 is just fine. The dipstick should show the oil as between the upper and lower markings.

yeah if you are above Max drain out some - you do risk damaging your cat converter with the oil level above MAX.
