Oil Use on 4.2 BNK 2006 A6
Question for you 4.2 guys. I have had this 2006 A6 with the 4.2 BNK engine for 9 months now. Question/concern is: car is using on average one quart of oil every 1,800 - 2,000 miles. Is this considered 'normal' oil use for this engine? Car has No leaks, no smoke at start up. I personally change the oil and filter every 6k miles using Lubro-Moly #2041, 5w-40w fully synthetic, which carries the correct vw.502-505 certification. I am 3rd owner. The repair/service history is well documented and most of the major TSB's have been taken care of. Car had 49k on it when I acquired. Now has 62k. I have had no mechanical or repair issues what-so-ever and get 27mpg in highway driving and 23 in city. Love the car! Just want insight into whether this oil use is "normal". Thanks

My 05 4.2 does not burn any oil at all. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and the dipstick is still at full at the time of each change. I have 92,000 miles on the car.

Any gasoline engine may burn a quart of oil in as little as 1,000 miles with nothing wrong, i.e. normal. And if you drive at high RPMs in high ambient temperatures, you could use more oil than an engine running at lower speed and cooler temps. Since your V8 is using a qt every 1,800 to 2,000 miles, you may consider that as normal. For reference, my 2006 A6 Avant w/ the 3.2l V6 and 49K miles on it uses maybe a quart between oil changes, which is every 6K - 8K miles.

I have an '05 4.2Q and it burns oil too.
1qt every 2,000~3,000 miles. It kind of gets worse near the end of the oil life. (Burns more after 7,000~8,000 miles)
My oil changes are always regular service at the dealership every 10,000 miles.
I have made several warranty claims about this matter and the dealership even had printed material from AOA on the service desk explaining that up to 1qt per 1,000 miles of oil consumption is normal.

I have 126,000 miles on my 05 4.2 and it will use only 1 qt in 10,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 0-40 European Formula and change every 10,000 miles. I do the changes myself and have performed oil samples, the wear is next to nothing. Blackstone has run the samples and is equally impressed at the low, low wear metals at 10,000 mile changes. He claims I could run much longer intervals, but I won't do that.

I believe Audi considers "normal" consumption anywhere from 750-850 miles per quart. It got bad enough when I was working at BMW that they considered 1 quart every 600 normal. SO with a 15000 oil change, you could add 25 quarts and be ok!?!?!why even bother changing the oil haha.

I used to have 2004 allroad with 4.2L engine and after 68,000 miles it started consuming up to 2 qt of oil every 1,000 miles during the highway driving. What's interesting - when driving in the city I only had to add 1 qt every 2,000 miles. No smoke, no sooty exhaust tips, no oil leaks, no loss of power. And no mechanic could pin point the problem. Traded it in after 77,000 miles and still don't know what was causing it. Go figure...
