Default Re: Feedback on Pilot Sport A/S

Well, I did say that the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires cannot be driven in snow. The key word here is cannot.

Default Why not ? The Pilot Sport A/S has a "M+S" designation which

stands for Mud & Snow. A/S tires are created solely for the dual purpose of driveable in the dry and in SNOW. However, if the snow is thick enough, even genuine snow tires won't work. Then studded tires or snow chains are the only solution, or even better - stay at home.

Default Sounds like you would be happier with an A8? (edit)

Since you are looking at new wheels, why not look at 18". That should significantly improve the ride.

The rough ride of the S6 is beyond a tire profile issue...This is about high spring rates...To me this car is much rougher in the city than the B7 S4 ...but when driving hard in your favorite twisties, it's all worth it. So much more composed and stable with better turn in than my S4 (2005.5 still has the 50/50 diff) The S6 is the most aggro stock Audi I've driven, Haven't been in an RS4 yet...

Default A8 too large

What I really need is the S6 engine in an A6 airmatic suspension!

Oh well. I drove the CLS550 yesterday, had a very good blend of comfort and firmness in the stiffest mode. I think it's almost as fast as an S6 as well, but nowhere near as exclusive.

Default honestly, you should look at an E63 or slightly used E55

if you want speed but handling is less important than a smooth ride, a Benz is a good choice.

Default I know. CLS55 is tempting me now

Low mileage 06 is the same price as an S6 but has already depreciated 25-30% so will probably hold it's value better than a new S6, at least initially.

Default Re: Stiffer but "better" clarification.

It absorbs both big and small bumps better, however it is still quite stiff. Sipping coffee might not be a good idea. The car is an improvement over S4, but the ride is not perfect. In all other respects, though, it's a great car. Handles great and can be (relatively) relaxed cruiser when needed. I am glad i got this car over M5/E63 (which I was considering).

Default Go for light rims & tires, and change dampers to the Koni FSDs.

The Audi stock cast rims are extremely heavy, look for the forged items, put on the Conti CSC2s (lightest among the high performance tires) and check if there are FSDs available. Tirerack have a good write-up and test about them. Lamborghini Gallardo OEM dampers, no less.
