Default Piech's megalomania is showing. I guess this is one way to get around mandatory retirement laws.

He all but ran VW into the ground with the W8 Passat, Phaeton, etc. VW is still a mess, and I think his meddling won't help. It also doesn't bode well for Lamborghini or Bugatti or Bentley, as those brands as well as the Audi R8 can and do compete with some Porsche models. Can niche maker Porsche offer mass market VW any assistance, given Porsche keeps honing the same designs or farms out cars like the Cayenne and upcoming Panamera to VW? Pischetsrieder was fighting an uphill battle to turn VW around, but Piech's minions were fighting every step of the way. He's no doubt happy to leave and will have no problems finding a new position.

"Volkswagen Board Chairman Ferdinand Piech, whose family controls Porsche, has steadily increased his influence at Volkswagen since Porsche's stake purchase. He helped orchestrate the ouster of Chief Executive Officer Bernd Pischetsrieder last November in favor of Martin Winterkorn.

Winterkorn, a long-time Piech prot?g?, has reorganized the group's management board since taking control, leading to the resignation of Wolfgang Bernhard, Volkswagen brand chief, last month. Pischetsrieder brought in Bernhard, a former DaimlerChrysler AG executive, in 2005 to turn around the struggling namesake brand."<ul><li><a href="http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061230/AUTO02/612300304/1362">http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061230/AUTO02/612300304/1362</a</li></ul>
