Preliminary info on this would be appreciated. I have searched a little without finding much information, as to the possible faults this represents. When it's occurred, the transmission has defaulted to 3rd gear and shifting ability is lost. Both times, a quick shut down and restart of the car has resolved the condition.

step 1 should be to provide us with a VAG-COM scan, so we can get more data.

The issue could be a sensor, could be that you need to change your tranny fluid and filter, could be other tranny issues...

This occur when your transmission goes into limp mode. This mean something goes wrong with your transmission. To protect itself, the transmission shift in 3rd gear and stay in that gear and all the gear light turn on at the same time like your... But why you have this problem? As raj said, you need to scan the car with vcds.... Could be something really bad or only a sensor.
