On my A6 the button would always get the car into accessory mode with no issues ever, but the problem was sometime the engine would not start. And I would have to push the different corners of the button or sometime push on it really hard. Is this your same symptoms?

hope this helps and here's the DIY link

hope this helps

ps I am no audi mechanic so please don't take my advice too seriously or sue me if doesn't work

I press it in every corner, hard, soft, medium pressure...and I can't even get it in accessory mode. The button does light up, however.

Yes, the car will tell you to put your foot on the break but I don't even get top that point. I can't even get to accessory mode.

Hmmm, mine doesn't seem to have 2 positions. When I push it lightly with my foot on the brake the car starts. If I push it lightly with my foot off the brake it goes to acc mode.

The original start buttons were a real problem on these cars. Original owners were complaining of getting them replaced 2 or 3 times. Audi changed the design in early 2006. There are TSBs on this issue. For some unexplained reason the starter button is one of the few common problems that I have not experienced.
