Rear Power Shade Issue

OK, for those of you that are going to jump on me. . . I already did a search, without much luck. The half dozen posts I found either had no responses, or were discussing retrofitting the rear shade.
So about a month ago, the button to raise and lower the rear shade, on my dash, starts acting sporadically; sometimes it raises the rear shade, other times, not. Did not pay much attention to it however.
Over the weekend, the shade was up, I switched into reverse. Shade goes down, automatically, and a LOUD, AWFUL grinding noise comes from the rear. Lasts about 8 - 10 seconds. I've learned now that when I put it in reverse, if I quickly raise the shade up, with the button, just after it goes down, I can avoid the noise. The noise only happens after a "down" cycle. Not an "up" cycle.
Has anyone else had this problem? Fixes, suggestions? Any bits of wisdom would be appreciated. I assume the motor is bad and needs to be replaced, but could there be a short somewhere, or the gear "slipped" a few teeth somehow, and its now just not hitting "home"?
I do have a VCDS cable but have been too busy lately to even hook it up and look and see if any errors come up.
I looked for a fuse to pull, to just disable the whole thing, but could not find one on either the driver or passenger side of the dash.

I have had similar problems with wipers and power antennas. It sounds like there should be a micro switch that shuts the motor off when the shade is fully lowered. Small electrical contacts sometimes fuse together if they heat up too much. The grinding would be the gears slipping.
Fixing would involve finding a replacement motor or if you're handy, taking the unit apart to see how it works. It could be that the gears slipped as you suggested and the timing is off.
This being a Audi, there could be some sort of control module and/or micro switches in the shade tracks/operating mechanisms .
All small motors have a connector for the wires. Unplug it so it doesn't do any more damage.

You can use the MMI to switch the operation so that it only goes up and down with the button - disengaging the tie to reverse. I did that to minimize the wear on the motor. I don't need it to go down every time I engage reverse.

I have the power shade, but mine never automatically go down when I put the car in reverse (which I like). Is that a setting controlled though the VCDS?
