Rear view mirror replacement technique question

Need advice on replacing the interior rear view autodimming mirror in my 2000 2.7T . The instructions posted elsewhere in audiworld seem to suggest that after disconnecting the electrical cable, that the mirror needs to be turned anticlockwise 90 degrees before being pulled out.
The part (mirror) that I bought from the dealership has the mirror attached by a ball joint to the straight plastic part that has the wiring and adapter, that seems to have to slide in to the mirror housing attached to the windshield. My question is whether to rotate the whole part or do I have to insert the plastic part in first and just rotate the mirror at it's ball joint.
In other words, I would appreciate some detail in instructions. Thanks.

I've just changed mine out for an autodimming mirror, you need to remove the plastic cover over the wiring and slide the black base piece up a little.
Then firmly hold the base of the mirror (next to the glass) and rotate to the left to remove. Or as my heavy handed colleague discovered, you can just pull firmly down towards the dash and the mirror will come off in your hand.
