Anyone know how to remove this strip? I assume that it requires removal of the inner trunk lid lining, but I cannot see a way to do this... any ideas???

Which year? The strip on the outside of the trunk lid above the license plate?
On a pre-2009 trunk lid, the chrome strip is held on with double sided foam tape and about a half dozen friction pins. I used a trim removal tool to gently pull the trim off. If done right, the trim can be reused. If you gorilla it, you'll still get it off, but the trim will be bent to hell and trashed. Start on one end, and work your way across to the other end, and you should be good. No need to pull the inner trunk lid liner.
On a 2009-up, haven't a clue.
