I've had a2004 A4. I just gave my 2011 A4 with just shy of 100k miles to my daughter. It runs like new but has the infamous oil consumption issue. I have a '01 Jeep Cherokee with 230k miles I want to replace. Are the '05 A6's with 100k miles reliable?

When wanting to replace my wife's oil leaking, ctrl arm eating, plastic bits breaking '99A6 Avant I took a chance on a '06 A6 Avant a local, highly respected Indy dealer had sold to a longtime customer at 50K, he maintained it well & ran it to 180K! I bought it for $5k and put 50K on it. Other than issues with water ingress caused by drains or sunroof leaks the car was quite reliable. Meanwhile I bought an '07 A6 Avant w/114K, now 154K. Found '08 A6 A6 Avant w/ Sline interior 124K, now 154K. I think the C6 is fabulous platform but definitely get a Pre Purchase Inspection from someone who knows the C6.

Because the Carfax was so clean on my two owner car and the pre-purchase inspection didn't raise any unfixable red flags, I bought my 2008 3.2 Avant at 130,000 miles and didn't think anything of it. Do your homework to get the right situation.

I too have an 05 A6 and Jeeps (95 YJ, 99 and 98 XJ and 2010 WJ). I have had 3 A6s (2 got taken out by deer and current is an 05 with 130k on bdy and 35k on AOA replaced engine). These hold up really well. When I had to replace the last one (an 07) I was shying away from the 05 because of the timing chain tensioner problems I had heard about. This last 05 I bought had the same problem, but the PO knew someone at audi and they replaced the engine with a brand new one and split the cost (I have the $30k bill for all the work).
As far as I know, the timing chain tensioners are the only really well known weak spot on the 05's. They were updated later (not sure when off the top of my head). The replacement motor in mine has the updated tensioner design which is not as prone to failure as on the early ones.
With a VAGCOM, you can see if there are problems with the timing chain tensioner being at the end of it's adjustment. A search should turn up more info.
Overall, the 3 I have had have been really solid and reliable and I have really enjoyed them. I wouldn't give up my Jeep for one though! But I wouldn't want just a Jeep either.

A few months ago I've bougth my Audi A6 4F C6 with 3.0TDI engine, year 2005. When I was looking I've found many with about 500.000kms and still running and not showing signs of age.
