I want to mount SottoZero Winter tires on one of my station wagons. I decided to not get Blizzaks and go with SottoZero since the car will drive most of the winter on the dry roads.
In any case what size should I go with? 245/45R17 or 225/50R17? This is to drive in NY, upstate, PA, MA.
Although I'm a dedicated Nokian fan for over 25 years, now using Hakka R3's on '10 A5 Avant and Studded Hakka 9's on my daughter's '08! I did try a set of Vredestein Wintrac Pro's on an A4 Avant years ago. The Vred's were the best handling snow tire I've ever used in dry/wet conditions and seemed to wear fairly well. While not equal to Nokian Hakka R series in snow/ice they were much tighter handling in non ice/snow conditions. Tire Rack sells them now and less than $5 more than Sotto's I saw listed. I've used Pirellis and Blizzak's over years but much prefer Nokian's winter tires. This is based on 50 years at 35K yearly in te snow belt of Central NY. YMMV

Thank you for the "insider" info. I will check out the Nokian.
apologies, did not ask this right away, but does anyone managed to fit 16" steel rims over front calipers? The Audi OEM steel rims.
the tirerack has the 16" wheel packages in the offerings: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...o&autoModClar=
AUDI offered 16 in wheels as a winter option in Canada. I bought a set in Ottawa for $160 years ago, long gone on my 1st C6 now nearing 300K in hands of a friend. I just checked car-part.com and theres a junkyard in Erie PA with aste at $50 ea. I think I'd go that route if I wanted to get back to 16 in wheels.
Yeah, we've got a 16" wheel set up (RIAL) from Tire Rack for our 2006 wagon. There are very few 16" wheels that fit this car. Based upon my experience with the 16" wheels and almost no clearance at the caliper, I'd probably go with a 17" pkg if I was doing it all over today.
