I'll post this here and in the tire/wheel forum:
I have a 2005 A6 4.2 with 18" wheels/Michelin PilotSport PS2's. I live in Denver and obviously need snows for the winter (it actually doesn't snow that much in the city, but when it does...)
I was thinking I'd buy a set of 17" wheels and snow tires and have them mounted in October. Any thoughts on good combos? The tires don't have to be "high performance".. Thanks.

I ran Bridgestone Blizzaks on a Scirocco for a few years and they performed very well. It was a much narrower tire though, I'm sure that was a factor (the wider the tire, the worse it will perform in the snow.) They were terrible on dry roads though, very soft, handling was reduced quite a bit.
My brother got a steel wheel/tire combo from the Tire Rack for one of his cars. He was pleased with the service but I don't remember which tire he had.

Call Tire Rack and dial Reggie (x644). This guy is super and I used him to order wheels and snows for my 911. His service is great and he's a nice guy too. The Rack does a superb job, and supplies many of the dealers in this area.

My opinion is that the smallest diameter wheels you can use (16") with a high tire will give the best snow traction and bump absorption.
Using Tirerack.com is a great idea. Unfortunately they do not rate Nokian tires, the makers of some excellent sport snow tires.
