Default Strange Heating Issue

I have a strange heating issue in 2006 A6 Avant.
When my heat is on and the car is idling I get little to no heat. If I rev the engine to 1500 rpm I get heat in about 3 seconds. When I let it go back to idle the heat slowly dissipates.

My coolant level is good and the temp gauge stays right in the middle.

I checked for codes and there are none.

Any suggestions?

Since your A6 is ~15 years old, the most-likely culprit are the solenoids in the heater control valve are sticking. The updated P/N for this valve is 4F1-959-617-B. It is an easy DIY to replace this valve, which is located in the right side of the plenum.

I'll give that a shot.

I thought that typically when that part fails it results in constant heat to the cabin.

Definitely looks to be an easy job. I am thinking the hardest part may be removing the hoses as they have been on there since new.

Any suggestions for removing the hoses easily?

It's crazy. That part ranges in price from $35.00 - $435.00+

How important is it that I get the genuine Audi part?

You can also try cleaning the unit first, then you dont have to take it off; only remove the unit from it's torx bolts and clean the valves.
