Thinking about buying a fast "beater" car, used GTO vs. new Mustang GT
My requirements are V8 powered, rear wheel drive and manual trans. I don't want to get into a debate about the quality of American (or Australian) cars. I drive an Audi for a reason. The purpose of this car is to basically beat the hell out of (not destroy) a fast car like the ones my parents wouldn't let me buy in high school back in the mid 80's. I'd plan on taking it out on the track and drag strip. I'll also plan on modding the car pretty heavily.
I've seen used 04 GTO's with very low mileage selling around Chicago for $22k. I'd rather get an 05 for the extra 50 hp if I can, but those are going for a few grand more. On the other hand, I can get a new Mustang GT for a little over $25k. The negative on the Mustang is all the 05's are pretty much gone and I'd have to order an 06 and probably not get that great of a deal. The Mustang looks much better, but the GTO, especially the 05 is much faster.

My own two-in-one solution to EXACTLY that challenge...

...and I couldn't be happier...although one DOES experience a bit of a learning curve when you're out doin' teh beatin'!

The RS6 is definitely one of my all time favorite cars, but...
I want to keep the A6 for everyday driving and would rather beat on a $22-25k car than a $70k car. Plus, Quattro kills the possibility of tire smoking, fishtailing, sideways burnouts. ;-)

track beater should be light
The cars you're talking about aren't really great for the track due to weight balance and overall lardiness. If you really have to have a V8, I'd recommend you look at a used M5. If you're happy with a six, I can't say enough good things about the BMW M Coupe. Very good track car, and quite cheap if you get one with 50k on the clock.

I want something low mileage (new-10k miles) and around $25k...
I don't expect to spend too much time on the track. I just want something with stupid power to re-live my lost high school days in. If I was going high mileage, I'd get a classic muscle car...like a Chevelle SS, Road Runner or real GTO.
