Thinking of trading in my A6 for another A6
Currently have an '05 A6 3.2Q w/ base (40k miles) suspension for an '06 A6 4.2Q S-Line (47.5k miles).
Dealer is asking $30k for the 4.2 (price already reduced) so maybe I'll offer 27-28k and ask up to $24k for mine but will likely get less.
Big difference is mine has another 6 months of factory warranty and then 2 year CPO afterward. The 4.2 factory warranty is up after another 2500 miles.
Overall condition of the paint and trim seems better on the 4.2 which I like. I'm not too keen on the increased gas mileage but the 4.2 seems a little more effortless compared to the 3.2 so I'm thinking the extra $500-1000/yr on gas may be worthwhile.
Thoughts are welcome.

nono- he's saying he's ok with slightly higher consumption
But if you drive it more or less the same, you probably wont use more fuel. When did the 4.2 go FSI or has it - that would make a big difference in mileage over the 3.2.

I don't think the mileage will be any worse.
I get 25-27 on the computer every week on the computer with my 05 4.2 which is non FSI. The average MPH is from 30-35 MPH. From what I see that is as good or maybe even better than the 3.2's. As you know the 4.2 engine is a smooth and powerful one. When I get the loaner 4.2 from the dealer it is a FSI engine and drinks the gas, which surprises me as it is supposed to be better on fuel than the non FSI. In my experience, it is far worse and I have no idea why that would be short of the fact that it is more power, 350 vs. 335.

Re: I think the 4.2 went FSI in 2007
I think You will notice a fuel consumptioon increase on city driving for sure, probably 30% over what you spend now,not sure about highway, but as you know, is a joy to drive the 4.2

We had an 02 A6 3.0 and 03 A6 4.2 in the family at the same time, highway was better on the 4.2
But as I said, city is totally dependent on your right foot! FSI will really improve the mileage, our S6 is better than the 4.2, and considerably better than my C6 S6 4.2 (a REAL guzzler)

Well, after extensive test drive of the 4.2, I turned her down
Felt faster than my 3.2 but I didn't think it was that much faster at all (and I stood on both of them). Definitely smoother engine and nicer/different exhaust note. If I didn't already have my 3.2 then I would have strongly considered it though.
Couple of things I didn't want to deal with was 2000 miles left on the warranty (no CPO) and the PPI revealed it would need new brakes soon (not sure if that's covered or not).
Regardless, I think I'll keep the 3.2 for now. It gets 30+ mpg without a problem even if I get on it every now and then. If I jump into a V8 again I think I really need to feel a much larger difference in engine power (used W211 E55 perhaps although I know it's overkill). Fun part is looking at cars again, it's like panning for gold!
