Default Tire size change 2008 A6

I am currently running the original 255/35/19's on RS wheels for my 2008 A6 3.2 Avant. TireRack.com states that in the Conti ExtremeContactDW that although it does come up with a 255/35/19 when I search, the size is not listed within the Size tab for this tire. Applicable sizes for my car are listed as 245/35/19.

Given that this tire may or may not be made in the 255, what changes can I expect from the 245 width and is a change in width possible/good/bad?

Thanks AudiWorld guys

and BTW, the 255/35/19 apparently is in stock.

there is also a 255/40/19 in similar pricing which could be an option, but only if it would give a bit softer ride or a quieter ride.

The 245/45 would result in a 10MM narrower tier as well as being marginally shorter sidewall. This would make it ride more harsh, if anything.

The tread design and tires being worn are likely to be the biggest cause of noise.

The 255/40 wil yield a bit taller sidewall, allowing more flex and a softer ride, but who knows if it'd be enough to actually feel the difference.

I think you've got the aspect ration backwards, the 35 is shorter sidewall, 40 is taller, 45 is tallest, as it's a percentage of the width?

You are right....but when you go narrower, the same series of sidewall will end up being smaller. A 255/40 will have a sidewall height of 102mm while a 245/40 will have a sidewall height of 98mm. Marginal yes, but still smaller.

For reference, your current sidewall should measure 89.25mm before factoring in tire wear.

I may have confused even myself...but the 255/40 that you stated they also have, will likely ride a small bit softer than your 255/35's

Going down to a 245/35 will only make it stiffer, if only marginally so.

Fwiw I have run 265/35/19 and 255/40/19 tires on my car and the difference is almost imperceptible.

Should be no problem at all.

Default Worksheet

I recently changed tire size on my 2008 S6 from 265/35/19 to 275/35/19 in order to get Continental ExtremeContactDWS all season tires. I wanted to know how this would affect tire diameter (would they rub?) and my speedometer. I found a few tire size calculators online but made my own worksheet since the math was easy. See attached. Maybe this will help you get comfortable with the change.
