I'm considering buying a new 3.2 A6 that has the Michelin tires (on 18 inch wheels) that received horrible reviews at TireRack for wet and snow performance. Can anyone give me some quick feedback? Should I try to get the dealer to swap them for the Conti's? TIA

If I remember correctly, the 18" high performance tire option comes with Michelin Pilot PS2 tires. They are among the stickiest summer maximum performance street tires available on the market. But like all summer high performance tires, they have NO traction on snow. If you are really interested in snow performance, go for dedicated snow tires. Or go for high performance all-season tires which are neither the best in dry nor the best on snow.

I have the 18" Audi OEM Continental ProContact? AS on my Avant. Only had a little snow exp so far this season. Suspecting the 18" size to be less than great? ...but in 12-15" snow last week they were OK ..except in unplowed parking lot in "parking speeds".
Still unsuire of whether to buy "Snow Set" of wheels and tires for future.I am thinking that 18" w/40series profile too "short " for any decent snow performance- needing taller profile and diffferent footprint?.

I'm thinking of going to 17" with a narrower profile and Nokian winter tires. I always debate the all season thing but it just seems like I should be running performance tires appropriate for the season I'm in.

It has the all season Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 which is getting horrible reviews at Tire Rack for wet, snow and ice. I'm wondering if the Conti Pro Contacts would be a better choice, provided the Dealer will swap with another vehicle. I'd give up some dry performance for better snow as my wife will be the primary driver.

But the ProContact's are not much better. They are all touring tires with comfort and quiet in mind, not performance. If you're looking for performance, go for high performance all-season tires such as Michelin Pilot Sport A/S or Pirelli P-zero Nero M+S.
I traded in the 17" ProContact's for the Nero M+S not too long after I got the A6 3.2 for my wife. I have been using the stickiest summer tires in the summer and performance snow tires in the winter for my TL-S.

You did not say whether you wanted to use an all-season tire (as I am trying to do now), or whether you would have a second set of wheels and tires.
If the former, the Nokian WR is a little noisy, a little squishy, but sticks very well to snow and ice for an all-weather. The Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S is quite, tight, has enough ice traction to make the ABS work, and costs less.
