Found this, but it doesn't talk about fluid change intervals.

I ordered a case of ZF LifeGuard 8 from CTSC too. Great price buying it this way and it was drop shipped straight from ZF.

Default ATF flluid change in 2005 A6 3.2L

I called up Lifeguard 6 folks that make the ATF fluid for many European and domestic cars as well, they told me that the fluid they use in my car, needs to be changed at 60K miles.
Fluid that came out was all black at 75K miles.
The original fluid color that I had was golden color.
There have been few changes in the ATF fluid part#s and fluid color.

My old allroad popped up with the dreaded 17125 error (torque converter seal) and I drove it too long (a week) which fried the tranny. There is a very respected tranny shop in our area (FNA Transmittion Wakefield MA) which pretty much every garaged in a 30mi radius uses. I discussed tranny fluid change intervals with him. He said these new tranny's have lifetime fluid and he recommends never to change it. He said he sees more failures post fluid changes than he does with trannys that never change their fluid.

There was another respected member of the allroad forum who also owns a garage (Hi-Pro Specialties in PA)and he echoed what FNA told me. YMMV..

I never trust the color of synthetic fluid. I'd be curious if what the results would be from a used fluid analysis, like they do with oil. I should check out BITOG and see if they have a tranny section.

This is a myth, i change a few "lifetime fluid" transmissons a week for years and have yet to have one failure, Just nice, smooth shifts. The transmission manufacture ZF says 60k miles. The company audi buys it, knows the trans will live out the warranty without a fluid change, and throws lifetime into the owners manual to make the maintenance schedule look more desirable....

Also transmission shops are not in the business of keeping your trans alive, there in the business of rebuilding it so keep that in mind.
