I remember when I had this issue...I actually saved some money buying the latch from a new jetta which shares the same part...

I had the same trouble with my 2005 A6. I took it to the dealer and of course it started to work. The day it happened, it was about 20 degrees outside. I used silicone and sprayed the hell out of it, after reading some previous posts. I have not had the trouble since. I was testing it one morning when the temps were 8 degrees. No problems so far.
