Unintended acceleration in 2006 A6 4.2

Well, I'm sitting here waiting for the flatbed towtruck. Driving in to work this morning on a crowded city street, pulling away from a stoplight among other cars, my 2006 A6 downshifted (normal), then kept pulling-- Hard -- accelerating so much I could hear the engine revving loudly. I was able to pull into the service lane fortunately after rocketing forward in an only somewhat in-control manner with brakes in full antilock mode and tires squealing. Very scary. It happened over an hour ago and my adrenalin is still pumping. It so, so easily could have resulted in an accident, hitting pedestrians in the crosswalk at the next intersection, or putting the car up onto the sidewalk crowded with pedestrians. This is the second major mechanical problem this car has had in the last 6 months (last spring, the computer system went haywire (nothing worked, though various lights flashed on and off randomly), leaving me stranded in a downtown garage). My prior car, a 3-series BMW, had just one minor mechanical problem in over 6 Years of ownership. So, this is hard to take, especially this safety issue. I'm losing faith quickly in the Audi and I think its days with me are probably numbered.

Doing a quick search here, I see others have complained of similar issues involving an apparently stuck accelerator (one, in an S6 just recently in a below thread), with the two most-suggested causes being a sticky throttle or the accelerator pedal getting stuck underneath the floormat when the pedal is floored.

cleaned, if you've been using inferior gas for example, but other than that my money is on floormats.

I took a look at my floormat. It was not snapped in place on the floor (carwash guys aways remove the mats to clean them...) but was not slid forward anywhere close to the distance it would have to have been for the gas pedal to get stuck under it (it would have needed another 2+ inches). Even then, I fidgeted with the floormat and the gas pedal to see how the pedal could cause undesired acceleration, and I have to say it would be a real one-in-a-million trick for the gas pedal to get stuck like that. The gas pedal pivots front to back and is not rigid, so getting the mat caught is hard to envision.

This has happened to me twice so far. THe floor mat issue is REAL. If your car was stuck at "accelerate" from a stop, I would bet money on the floor-mat.
try to remember if the pedal was or felt like it was stuck to the floor. i know it's a bit hard to recall given the state of things at htat time....but I have posted this before:
ALWAYS check to make sure that your driver Mat is snapped into the posts before you get behind the wheel!

I had a similar issue on the S6 (posted a couple of weeks ago); it happened twice to date as it kept on accelerating after I had lifted my foot from the gas pedal. Called the dealer, who told me it was either (i) the floor mat; (ii) the cruise control (when I pushed the brake, I felt the "clonk" you feel when you brake in cruise control). I am positive it was neither, and know it was a malfunction. I am not prone to complaining about this and that in the car, and actually love my S6.... but I am actually worried when I accelerate now.

I remember hearing these stories back in the early 90s, it turned out to be driver error.
Mainly the fact that the 80s and 90s Audis had smaller and closer pedals than most North American vehicles. So a lot of times people would push the brake but also push down on the accelerator with the corner of their foot as well.
I know at least on my older 80s Audis they were close together for “heel toe” driving, (I.e. rally car) ...also the gas tank was mounted behind the rear seat for more ground clearance... man I loved those old 4000 quattros!!
...plus rear and Center air locking diffs... oh man getting off topic
