Default Upgrading from 2.7T to New Audi ?

I have a 2002 Audi 2.7T, and could not be happier with the car. I love the twin turbo charged engine. I have to purchase a 2006 model, and wanted to know that since there is no 2.7 available, will I be dis-satisfied with the new 3.2 ?? Any thoughts? I don't want to go up to the V8.

Default One thing you'll find missing from the 3.2L is the massive low-end torque

that's available from the 2.7L turbo engine. You'll have to find it in the 4.2L V8.

Default Torque output is very similar - however the 3.2 delivers it in a linear fashion.

The old 2.7t could hand you all 258ft lbs of torque at right around 2000rpms, so you got that characteristic shove of a turbo car. The 3.2 doesn't give you that "afterburner" feeling, but in some venues like the track (not that many people go there in an A6), the linear power deliver is far more effective at laying down the power in a controlled fashion.

Besides, now you don't need to worry about a visit from the turbo lady ;-)

You won't get the low end "zip", but the rest of "the package " makes up for the difference IMO, (01' 2.7T to 06' 3.2 Avant)-- and you don't get the Turbo "fly-by-wire" start up Lag either. Easy , positive transition (2.7T-3.2 FSI) --unless you're going to the "Drag Strip ! MPG way better than 2.7T --as a bonus !

Thanks for the info, if I go with the 3.2, I will definately miss the ooomph in the lower end, something I loved about that car.

Default That's what I meant by LOW-END torque.

Peak torque at high rpm is not very user friendly at city driving speed. When you have plenty of low-end torque, you simply step on the gas, and the car pulls your off like there's no tomorrow. Only the 4.2L V8 can do it as well as the 2.7T.

Default Peak torque in the 3.2 comes on at 3250rpms. Not exactly Honda levels;-)

At the track it was extremely frustrating to have the torque come on like an off/on switch when exiting a corner. Basically you had to keep revs under 2000rpms or deal with full boost too early in the exit - which would mess up the line. On the street it's another matter, but on the track it's far from ideal:-)

Default In city driving, the 3.2 requires gear downshifts and a noisy cabin

to get some decent acceleration. The 2.7T and 4.2 will pull away in any gear, swiftly and quietly. So it all comes down to whether the car is being used on tracks or on civilized roads.

Default To some people, that noise and downshifting makes for a sporty feel ;-)

I know what you mean, since I have an A3 2.0T, and numberous high revving normally aspirated cars. It takes a different style to make the best use of either. For all that it is a great city car, the A3 tends to make me lazy. I drive one of the Italian beasts just to sharpen up the driving skillz

so that's why the car feels real strong when going uphill. There's a long hill near my house that the car just blows right up it.
