The reason why you should follow the sequence is to prolong the life of the gasket. As you are torqueing down the bolts from the inside to the outside, the gasket expands outwards. Removing the bolts from the outside to the inside allows the gasket to retract inwards as you release the pressure from the outside to the inside.

Removing the bolts from the inside to the outside or in a random manner would cause the gasket to stretch internally and will cause it not to fit well again if you are planning on reusing it.

Remove the gasket following the wrong sequence a few times and you will clearly see the difference. The gasket will become unusable because it became elongated here and there.

i mean, gasket costs peanuts compared to labour involved to do it.
