Default Violent Downshift

Downshifted from 2nd to 1st in manual mode at 5 mph. Transmission slammed into gear so violently that the wheels almost locked up. Tried replicating the issue, but car now downshifts normally. WTF?

Has anyone experienced this?

It happened to me once ...not at 5mph but it slammed so hard I'll never forget it. Happened months ago and haven't had one problem. I am noticing that trans is not asmsmooth as it was 2 years ago. The slam may be a sign that trans fluid change needs to be done. I believe that REPUTABLE DEALERS" update to new fluid and update software at same time... Maybe that software update fixes this.

Has also happened to me, I heard fluid change will resolve the problem. I have ordered 7 liters of fluid, a gasket and filter and will be hopefully have it done soon, will let you know how it goes. If anyone else has had this problem or tranny fluid changes recently could you please advise.

I've only experienced in Sport mode when the car jerks approaching a stop..Is that what you meant, or were you actually in Manual?

In manual mode. More than a jerk. The transmission slammed into 1st gear. I heard it and felt it. Never had this issue in either Sport or regular auto mode.

ATF and differential fluid change resulted in significant improvements in shift quality. The Audi claims of lifetime fluid are BS. I have them changed every 40K miles.

Exactly, the Audi claim of lifetime fluid is total BS! I actually contacted ZF (the makers of our transmissions) and just received a response 20min ago from someone in Germany. It read:

Wir können Ihnen folgende Lösung für Ihre Anfrage anbieten:

Paul,

ZF recommends that you change your Life Guard fluid after 100,000 miles if you drive very mildly. We also recommend that you change your fluid after 60,000 miles if you drive aggressively. An aggressive driving style will obviously break down the fluid much sooner so base your maintenance on your driving style.

Have a good day,

Joe Laubinger

Guess I should be making an appointment to have mine changed then. I drive a mix of mild and aggressive, more towards the aggressive side if you ask my wife.

I have previously posted a ZF PDF saying 40k and 60k. Either way it is a critical maintenance item.
