Hi,
I just pick up a used 06 A4 for my girlfriend. So far, we are very happy with the car. It's fully loaded with every options just like my A6 (minus S-line). I did the oil change on the car last week and used 5W-30 extended performance (which is good for 15k but I normally change mine after 10k). Anyways, both of us notice a big jump in fuel consumption. Randomly, I came across a thread online with people arguing whether to us 0W-40 or 5W-30 in Audi. I checked back to the manual and it also said 0W-40 otherwise 5W-30 is fine. I understand this part but jumping from extended performance and doing oil change every 10k to normal oil making very nervous. How are you guys doing your oil change? How often and which type of the two are you guys using?
Also, I know Mobil 1 offers extended performance 0W-40 in Europe but can't find anything here in the US.

As long as the oil is on the approved list it should be fine, some people swear by the brand that they use, some don't. I was just at the Audi dealership here in Columbus OH they service department manager for both the Audi and Porsche told me they use Castrol syntec 5w40 or 0w40 on their vehicles, and even between the 2 they don't find too much of a difference.

I have had the dealer do 5,000 mile oil changes since day 1. I don't trust 10,000 mile intervals. By the way when I purchased my car I asked the service tech about how frequently I should change the oil and he said:
"if you bought the car change the oil every 5,000 miles, if you are leasing it change the oil every 10,000 miles and let the poor bastard who buys it as a pre-owned car deal with the ramifications of the 10,000 mile oil changes."

uhmm, I used Extended Performance from Mobil 1 hence the 10k miles oil change (the oil itself is rated for 15k lifetime). Our family averaged 20k miles/per car year so all my Audis are hitting 100k mark very soon and all are working perfect.
If I was using the standard oil, which 0W-40 would be in this case, I would definitely change it every 5k. I prob will end up using 0W-40 once to see how things go. It definitely will benefit the fuel consumption but to what extend? and will it worth for me to do oil change twice the number of times I have been doing.

We all know the oil we use is good for 5K, 10K and 15K, but what about the oil filters?
I also use a magnetic drain plug and get a blackstone oil report done every other oil change.

With the cost of 10 quarts per oil change with the 4.2, and the wars over oil and whatnot I am sticking to 10k oil changes with a filter change every 5k to keep the oil cleaner.
Dufferdude I agree with you 100% it is funny how the manual says nothing about a filter change every 5k, at first I thought it was because Audi was giving away free maintence for 4 years/50k (in 2005,2006) so in order to save $ they didnt even suggest it. But it would be wise to change the filter at 5k as it keeps the oil in better condition for the 10k mark.
I use Mobil 1 0w40 as it is readily availble all over, and is VW, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes approved.
