Why does the v10 in the R8 make so much more HP?
I am going to go ahead and join the disappointed (enginewise, everything else is best-in-class) bandwagon: Why does the 5.2l v10 from the s6/s8 make 90hp more in the r8?
I refuse to believe that the air intake can make such a difference. There are plenty of tuners out there that make race-quality intakes, headers and exhaust . . . so what gives?
I know nothing about programming, but would it be possible to reverse-engineer a chip to parallel/clone the r8 ecu?

I'm just guessing--- but maybe the heads have been worked, compression ratio raised, then the cam..etc etc..90 hp is not really that hard to get..hotrodders have been doing it forever. Just chipping an engine can give results but not like mechanical changes inside things like you mentioned plus the engine itself has to be able to hold up under long term racing conditions..that takes strength. When you mentioned "everything else is best in class" can you be more specific?

Current S6 V10 making 435HP is underpowered because Audi has RS6 that is 580HP. No one would spend the money that RS6 costs if S6 would make over 500HP.
The power, more than likely, comes from higher RPMs, so tuning as well as hardware have to be set up for the engine to rev higher.

When i said "best in class" i was referring to handling, brakes, and luxury. Not to get into a vs-war, but I think acceleration is the only area where the e63 and m5 beat the s6.

I am guessing we'll see a third party supercharger become available for the 5.2V10 at some point. The supercharger for the 4.2V8 (found on this site somewhere) runs $6,000 and takes the 4.2 above 400HP if memory serves. I am hoping an equivalent product takes our V10s over 500HP.
But if the RS6 gets here first...I'll be looking at a different course of action!

PES tunning just came up with supercharger for R8 V8, it not cheap.

I spoke with someone there once, and they told me they are working on superchager for R8 V10. If top of the engine in R8 V10 is the same as S6 V10 then superchanger should work for S6, keep your finger crossed.

Mostly RPM
I had a thread about this a while ago.
The power bands are very similar to each other RPM to RPM, but the R8 continues to another 1,500 RPM, that is the key diff. There are different valves as well, diff. valve springs, and a different crankshaft, to take the extra RPM.
The intake system is significantly different, so between that and the RPM, there is your power.
Compression ratios are identical, and fuel pressure is ever so slightly higher on the R8, like 15 PSI more, probably to supply the extra fuel needed at high RPMs. I haven't checked if the injector part #s are different, but I suspect they are.

A key factor here will be refinement. Whilst someone buying an R8 will be happy (perhaps even expecting) a nosier engine sound someone buying an S6 will (in general) be expecting a much quieter installation. If the S6 was noisy and (thus) tiring to drive over a long distance then sales would struggle, likewise if an R8 simply sounded and behaved like a saloon car it too would fail to attract sales no matter how good it handles or looks. As AofC RR points out the installation of the 4.2 litre engine in the RS4 was very different to the installation in the A6 despite being essentially the same engine so this is not something new nor is is it unique to Audi.
