Default Winter wheels

Yep, dog days of summer and I'm thinking about snow tires.

My wife's 2005 A6 came with 17" 5 spoke wheels, and I picked up a set of the 16 spoke 17" wheels for winter use. I really like the 16 spoke wheels, but am thinking that maybe I should downsize to 16" tires for winter.

We drive the car in all sorts of weather and it's my wife's primary car. She has a thing for potholes....

I'd run 225/50/17 or 225/55/16 winter tires. The 16" tires will probably cost a bit less and give a smoother ride in the ice ruts of New England.

Thoughts?

Anyone have winter wheels that they particularly like? I haven't found a 16" wheel that I like on the C6 yet (silver). Would prefer OEM or quality aftermarket. No bling.

The A3 does have a 16" wheel with 16 spokes that looks a lot like the 17" A6 wheels, but I don't know if they have the right offset or are otherwise appropriate for the A6...

TIA!

I am running Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4. They are great tires. I also had a good experience with the Dunlop SP Wintersport M3. The M3s were better in the snow but the PA4s are better overall. Either way, a huge improvement over No Season Tires.

Will be running Nokian winter tires. Probably the studdable 5. (without studs).

Also will probably stick with the 17" wheels I already own.

I run the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5s on my stock 17s for the winter (non-studded) and run a much larger wheel for summer; Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT

I've been running on the Dunlop Wintersport M3's and now the 3D's for the past several winters. I love them.
