Lagging well down the list.... anyone care to share their thoughts / experiences?

"The 2011 U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 73,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2011 model-year cars, trucks and multi-activity vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 228-question battery designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate identifying problems and drive product improvement. The study was fielded between February and May 2011.

Just stick with Consumer Reports (or CR for short) and True Delta (or TD for short). They are much superior to JD Power & Associates (or JD P&A for short) unless JD P&A 100% matches CR and TD.

Anyway, here is the truth about Audi from 2005 onward (based on information from CR and TD).

In dependability, durability, quality, reliability, satisfaction and service, the following is what dragged down Audi in Consumer Reports-or CR for short and True Delta-or TD for short. Screw what JD Power & Associates-or JD P&A for short and Strategic Vision-or SV for short have to say unless what they have to say 100% matches what CR and TD have to say. Overseas, Audi, for the most part, is one of the best in dependability, durability, quality, reliability, safety, satisfaction, security and service.

There are a lot of problems with all versions of the 2005 and early build 2006 A6s as well as the 2009 to 2011 A6 3.0T. These 2005 to 2011 A6s are 80% of Audi's North American A6 sales (and, therefore, 80% of CR's and TD's North American A6 data). Otherwise, the A6/S6 is one of the best since mid build 2006.

There are a lot of problems with the 2005 A8 4.2 and 2004 and 2005 A8L 4.2. These A8s and A8Ls are 80% of Audi's North American A8 and A8L sales (and, therefore, 80% of CR's and TD's A8 and A8L data. Otherwise, the A8/A8L/S8 is one of the best since 2006.

There are a lot of problems with the 4.2 and 3.0T versions of the Q7 for all model years. These versions of the Q7 are are 80% of Audi's North American Q7 sales (and, therefore, 80% of CR's and TD's North American Q7 data). The Q7 is also near the bottom of it's class in most areas of performance. Otherwise, the Q7 is one of the best (since introduction).

Problem is, the vast majority of buyers only " research " reliability by the " JD Power ranking" religiously posted by every podunk news org every time their PR people release one- Audi is almost always in the bottom 10-15 .
I have been a multi model Audi enthusiaist for 25 yrs , but do put up with all the many probs each model has had.
OTOH, the repair folders for all my Porsches, MBZs and Bimmers are just as thick, but the latter models have gotten a LOT better in the past 5 yrs - they were awful in the late 90s to early 2000s. Seems like Audi ( and corporate parent VW) need to step up their game in reliabilty vs their competition in this regard- as they do still lag - and this contributes to resale value lag also.
They have the coolest /sharpest cars, but when I have dealt with service and they have dealt with the " main office " on a tough issue , I can still tell that their US operations are less well-oiled than MBZ and BMW -by far.
And the fact that I have to pay for an Enterprise rental car for service still grates vs the free loaners of the same marque brand at all my other brand dealers ...I have friends who get free service loaners on their Suburbans , for crying out loud !

Since 2008, BMW (or BM Trouble You, as I love to now call them) is way worse (with very few exceptions) than Audi ever has been according to CR and TD. Audi is the one that has gotten way better (and is now good with some exceptions) since 2005 according to CR and TD. MB, Porsche and VW have gotten way better (and are now good with some exceptions) since 2007 according to CR and TD. All of this is fact.

Uh oh. I was one of those JDP respondents and couldn't render high marks due to a factory manufacture latent defect that allowed water to leak at the passenger-front sunroof pillar. It was ultimately properly welded/sealed and resolved, but should never have passed Audi factory quality control (which includes a heavy rain test).

Otherwise I'm very pleased with my A5, and so indicated.

I honestly dont think anyone buys an Audi (or BMW/Mercedes/Porsche/etc...) because they are reliable cars. That doesn't mean that we accept unreliability, but accept they are not as bulletproof as some other luxury brands.

Having owned 4 A6s over 10 years we elected to purchase a LS460 last year. I just needed something different and while the A6s were all very reliable they couldn't touch the level of reliability of the Lexus.

After 13 months with the LS we were back in the Audi showroom ordered an A7... Nothing went wrong with the LS460, but it was just no fun to drive. Its like driving a coffin...

While I expect Audi to be reliable I am willing to accept some glitches now and again in exchange for driving enjoyment.

The one compliment I would pay Lexus is that the service experience is the best I've had. For the couple routine service calls I've had I'm in and out in 10 minutes including being given a Lexus loaner car without having to ask.

My advise to Audi is work on the service experience... The showroom may sell the first Audi, but the service will sell someone their second, third, fourth...

^ Exactly. My wife loves the "free" Lexus brunch (I've given up teling her the cost for same is rolled into the service charges - "there's no free lunch").

Unfortunately the two Audi dealers near me both get a really bad rap on service from people I know who have used them.

My wife is on her third BMW and their service department has proved to be excellent - always have loaners available even for last minute stuff.
MB in Houston is similar I hear.

It's one thing to have something go wrong but then to have poor service to fix it just compounds the problem.

so is it routine that audi dealers do not offer loaners?

I have an Acura TL, and I was always given a loaner (or a courtesy ride to the closest mall) when I had any service more than a quick oil change.

My dealer (Audi of Dallas - previosuly University Park Audi) gives Free Loaners and Free Car washes!
