Default Chains for OEM 19in tires?

What chains work for the 19in tires? Per Thule's website the only option for 255/40-19 is THULE K-SUMMIT K44 -- rather spendy at ~ $550 MSRP. OTOH, for 255/45-18 there are many other options, eg THULE CG-9 104 at ~ $180 MSRP. Since the total diameter and tire width are the same, it seems to me that the chains should fit all OEM tires equally well ... Where am I wrong?

Thanks!

Where are you located? I am in California, which is certainly not the expertise capital of driving in winter weather conditions however, I regularly take my A7 to Mammoth Mountain (ski area) and have been several times where conditions were pretty challenging (dumping snow and white-out streets) and the A7 performs amazingly. I have 20" wheels and put Conti DWS Sport Contact tires (all weather) and the car performs quite well. With the 19"s, I assume your tires are all weather?

Its a Quatro, and does not disappoint....

I am in California as well and have been driving Audi's to Tahoe / Sierra 20+ years. CHP requires "chains in possession" for every car or truck. Checks are done now and then, maybe more as a trick to slow traffic flow than anything else, but you need to have chains in the car.

AWD with M+S are not required to chain up for R1 and R2 conditions, but in R3 conditions chains are required no exceptions. R3 is rare and main roads are closed before R3 (for instance, there are no road signs to enable R3 on I80), but R3 on smaller roads in blizzard conditions is not unheard off, and IIRC I had to put chains on SR-267 over Brockway summit a couple of times and maybe on SR-20.

So I'd like to get some chains that fit, just in case, although the likelihood of needing them is very small indeed.

Thanks!

If you are not going to need them, here's a small set that should comply.

Here's a eBay set that someone had to buy to enter The Sequoias National Forest & Kings Canyon in California. There are dozens of chain auctions under $20.
