You should have received a smaller, plastic emergency key with your car. I keep mine in my wallet. If you lose a keyfob, the e-key can unlock your door and start the car by holding it up to the small key symbol imprinted on the dash while pressing the start button.

Here is my concern, what happens if the battery in the remote dies, or the remote gets wet.. will the car still start without the working key transponder ?? The older Audi's had a key hole to start the engine....

Yes. The manual shows the procedure - you hold the key or fob against a panel on the dash. It's probably an RFID device or something similar that does not need power to communicate with the car.

Much before the battery dies, you get a message when you start the car that the key battery needs replacement.
