Did the Alpins work well on freezing rain/ice? I'd love to get more of a performance tire, since only a few days really need the grip of the ice and snow, but from what I've read the performance winter tires aren't a whole lot better than good all-seasons on ice, and I know all-seasons on ice is a scary combination.

Ended up with Dunlop SP2's mounted on a set of stock 18's.
Yup, kinda a boring but accomplished what I was looking for in a winter setup - narrower and more side wall than the 19" sport setup.
Will have them put on the car next service which should be end of October-ish.

Ordered a set of Pirelli 240 Sotozero winters - 255/45xR18 to be mounted onto my ex-Q5 OEM 18" rims. Tire supplier just called to advise that they're here already. I'll get them mounted on those rims mid to end Oct-ish. Will see how its goes on the A7- hopefully those rims look fine, esp with my set of new H&R spacers (12mmFront; 15mm Rear)

I went with 17" 235/55 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3Ds. Down from 19" and the POS Eagle LS2s - they're barely good on wet roads - I had them on a previous car. I've also had the Dunlops (earlier model) before and they're an excellent tire for the winter and they are bad at all on dry roads.

I ended up ordering Michelin xIce3 in 235/50 to put on my newly acquired Q5 18" wheels. Planning on having them installed in November.

Heh ACHiPo - that's interesting! Lets post pix of our A7s with Q5 wheels when they get installed, whenever.... Are you planning on using spacers in between, if not it won't fit esp in the front, which will be hitting the calipers.
