Default "Self correcting" imbalance

2001 S8 with 100k. Three times now, I have experienced a serious shimmy which feels like a wheel starting to fall off. It gets progressively worse until I stop to check it out. All three times, when I got back on the road, it had corrected itself. My Audi dealer says it may be the diff. Any other ideas?
