$1100 for Transmission Rebuild in Chicago W/Warranty
OK, so my transmission has been going into Limp mode every six months for the past 15 months. All the transmissions have said it's not a hard part issue. It just sticks in fourth gear for ten seconds when you are accelerating up to 75 or so. When the fluid level gets low or in really cold weather it goes into limp mode. Knock on wood, it's been good for the past six weeks. I was not willing to spend $2550 to take a chance it would come back but for $1100, I am going to go for it.
I found this ad on eBay and ironically the guy is right at Western and Addison in Chicago. It's near Wrigley Field for those not familiar with Chicago. He told me it sounds like I have a grounding problem with one of the wires. Over the phone, he said it's a grounding problem and he can fix it for $600 and include a new filter and flush for the tranny. I am going to give it a shot. If it fixes the problem, I am going to let this car go for $7 or $8k and upgrade to an 02.
I may just pay $1100 and just get it rebuilt and have a warranty to provide to the new owner. As we all know the 5HP is more common on the 740s, they have replaced several 740 trannys and A6s. I guess my car will be a guinea pig for the A8s. Obviously, if my tranny has worked for the past 16 months with going into limp mode three times, it's not totally broken. Still, I would like to get it replaced and have a warranty so I can resell the car. If this cost me big bucks, the little lady would suggest (over and over again) for me to buy the 02 Q45 instead of the 02 A8.

You might want to take a look at his feedback and dig a little more before you drop $1100.....
He has only sold one item in the last year, and the feedback was negative. I would e-mail "tekkenhead52" and see what he says. Here is the feedback he left for your guy in Chicago: "STOLE MY $700! SENT JUNKYRD BURNT UP TRANSMISSION! DO NOT BUY ! EMAIL ME FOR NFO"
Good luck<ul><li><a href="http://feedback.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=trannyforles s">His feedback</a></li></ul>

Agreed, I woulndn't want to pay somebody $25/hr to work on my car
The guy just couldn't buy parts and do the labor and make any money. Probably not the situation you want to get into.
Good luck!

Re: Agreed, I woulndn't want to pay somebody $25/hr to work on my car
I am going to check it out next week. I will see if it is the grounding issue. I agree it sounds too good to be true. I will check it out and let you know. It's a reality in Chicago to go to neighborhoods with Immigrant workers of any nationality getting $10-15 an hour in cash and the owner charges very reasonalbe rates.
There are different rebuilds. My guess it's the $250 kit and there is $850 left to labor and margin. I am going to check it out next Saturday and will let you know.
You guys probably think I am being really cheap with this tranny issue. As long as it's still shifting, I dont see the need to spend $2550 for a car that is going to go for $7k on trade.
