Braking while trying to turn will unsettle your car very quickly. A quick jerk to the right, then straighten it out and brake, is the way to do it, just like you did it!
Glad everything worked out!
You should track your car, they teach you a lot about this!

Even without braking, this would normally put a car without ESP into a spin. Under hard braking, the rear is lightly loaded, and the car would be even easier to spin.
I wonder, though, if the combination of ESP and ABS is smart enough to recover even under this oh s*** situation. Would it release the braking on the LF and LR to help straighten the car, and then resume braking with all four?
And you're right, we definitely need to see an '04 on track :-)

So far Audi has been wonderful. They have said and done all the right things. We have been able to continue our vacation without much worry about the vehicle repairs. Today I was told they would transport the car to Minneapolis for repairs at a certified repair shop. I have heard from the dealer in Albuquerque daily, my selling dealership in Iowa City Iowa and the A8 representative assigned to me. I hope the repairs don't take too long, but no one knows about parts availability. I will try to keep the board posted regarding the process if everyone is interested. Our biggest problem is that we have to ride home in a Hertz Ford Taurus. That car really makes you appreciate the Audi.

Great story Kimballt. Raffirms my faith in Audi engineering, rather than the flash. This story puts real issues in perspective. Thank God you were all O.K.

I too am relieved that you and your family survived what could have easily been a disaster. I am also glad that Audi has stepped up to the plate and treated you so well- after all of the problems a few of the new A8L owners have posted here on the forum, as well as some questionable treatment of said same customers by AoA, it appears that at least one segment of AoA has their act together. Hopefully it becomes contagious.
