An 05' A8L really as quick as an 03' S8?

Sports Car International had the '01 S8 w/auto at 5.7 in the 0-60.
I'll bet my magazine beats your magazine..
Seriously, I have no seat time in D3's, and I don't plan to until after I've reduced the current personal fleet of 6 cars. Besides, I love the JNR factor of my S8 Aluma-bomber.

Heh, looks like we've won over another JNR'er there Mark 8-). I too have not..
...yet tried a D3, but my guess is paper specs aside, the experience won't be the same regardless.
Interesting to note Edweirdo's fagazine test noted 70-0 stopping distance to be 173' - *precisely* what I measured on my accelerometer last month, and got down to 169 after installing Randy's "block".
Good news for you upcoming blockheads, confirmed hard data! My guess is it's even sub-169' after my recent Super Blue bleed.
Anywho...

One day after I got my S8...
My wife was driving, and sat next to an A8 D3 at a stop light. The guy obviously wanted to "show us", but despite starting first, he could not keep up. We only went up to 60 or so, but that did not seem close. Of course he may not have pushed his car...

...you don't really want to be mistaken for Edweirdo you don't.
And I imagine you actually DRIVE your //S8!
