1997 A8 Transmission Limp Mode INCORRECT GEAR RATIO?

I've read much information on this, but just looking for a definitive answer as to whether it is the pump that is damaged or if anyone knows what the following indicates, for sure (maybe I missed it). I see that PaulW is very knowledgeable on this subject, so hopefully you can help Paul. The problem started with my 'DPZ' (early 97) Trans. going into LIMP MODE as my wife came off the highway. Turning on and off the key would clear it, but it would immediately reoccur after putting it in any gear except REVERSE. Reverse works fine. After searching the forum, I discovered to my horror that it was most likely run with low fluid level for several months (I don't drive it much & after talking with her--I discovered--it had been making the short 'Squealing' sound for a couple of seconds upon start up, just prior to this problem). SO, I've tried changing the fluid and filter (per the procedure posted), which wasn't all that dirty, but was obviously low (Only about 5 quarts came out, instead of 8+), with no change in symptoms (not a surprise, right?) But the code returned is the INCORRECT GEAR RATIO code. Does anyone know why it would set this code? Does the trans. know if it has low pump pressure? Finally, is this confirmation that the pump could be replaced to fix? Or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

use some CRC QD and some dielectric grease when its clean. This connection has no rubber boot and gets dirty easily. I've had to clean mine several times to cure this exact problem.

Well, I do hear a clunk after I put it in D,4,3,2, then it goes into LIMP (I forgot to include that evidently important detail). What does that mean?

Thanks for the suggestion, but cleaning the connector didn't solve it. Any other ideas? Could it happen that fast, that the clutches wore that quickly (out of tolerance) due to fluid starvation?
