I have a 1997 A8 that won't shift at all. The
car was running fine (as far as fine could be
for an A8!). I went to leave my house one morning and backed out of my driveway and that was as far as I went. I changed the transmission fluid and filter but still have the same problem. This car had no indication of a tranny problem where my wife's 1998 A8 had the transmission hunting issue. The 97 has 140k miles and the 98 had 90k. Can anyone help???

Will the car MOVE? Does it remain in one gear all the time but moves? Are ALL of the shift indicator lamps in the instrument cluster lit at once?
If there was absolutely no indication beforehand of trouble, then maybe, if you are lucky, it's only the F125 switch on the transmission (reverse safety) which is a common thing to wear out.
Are your Backup Lights (white) always on? Is your passenger side rearview mirror not tilting properly? Is your central rearview not dimming?
All these things are related to the F125 safety sensor.

I also recently have experienced this. After putting 4K miles on a 2006 A6 3.2 Quattro, without problems, yesterday I started car in garage and all the shift indicator lights went on simultaneously. Car would not move in reverse or in any forward tiptronic gear. After several tries at restarting, things went back to normal. Call to Audi service led service manager to say "the car went into safety mode." But at that point he believed I was describing a situation where the car would drive slowly. Today, the same thing happened. Again, after twenty minutes and about a half-dozen engine-stops and engine-starts, only the "P" was illuminated on start-up and I could shift into D and drive to to dealer, where I left car.
