1998 A8 4.2 - Timing Belt Replacement - and what else at 147K?
First of all, my thanks to every one of you for your insights and advice. You know who you are. I have learned more from searching this forum than I ever could from talking to Audi or the dealer mechanics.
My car has 147K, and now has an oil leak at the front main seal. I'm reading that while my mechanic has it all torn apart, he should replace the timing belt, the tensioner roller, idler pulleys, the water pump, the serpentine belts, etc. (The first timing belt replacement was at 110K three years ago.)
Question is: What else should I consider if I'm thinking of keeping the car long term? I love the car and have the finances to keep it properly maintained; just don't know what further parts replacements or adjustments make sense at this time.
PS Found a great mechanic in Grand Rapids, MI.
His name is Jos and he owns George's Foreign Car service. His brother has an A8, so he has experience with the cars.
It's 46 degrees here today. Think spring!

Since the front main has gone, I would consider replacing all of the front oil seals.....
including the camshaft seals and the oil pump seal. I can't remember any other seals up there, but look and see if there are any.

Re: Has a tranny filter/flush been done?
Yes, I talked the previous owner into a complete filter flush and repair of all leaks as condition of purchase. He dropped $1000 on the car the last week he owned it.
