1. remove the small white cap -- this covers and contains the tube for the fuel level. I took a piece of 1/4" steel (1.25 x 12 inches long), drilled two holes and bolted in two 10mm bolts to create a tool that will fit into the two round holes in the top of this cap. Press the flexible tabs on the sides of the cap and turn it clockwise until the two small arrows line up. then pry the cap out with a screwdriver. Then reach in with pliers and grip the top of the tube inside and pull it out until you can grab it. It's about 10 inches long, and will slide right out... you'll need to unplug the wiring while pulling it out.
2. Remove the bolt on top that goes thru the entire assembly and screws into (something) at the bottom of the tank.
3. Next detach the fuel lines if you have not already done so, and unscrew the large black ring. To do this, I took another piece of steel I had hanging around, and welded 1/8" x 1" x 2" steel pieces to it...and bent them to fit the grooves in the side of the ring. And used it to loosen the ring the first turn or two. I'm sure there are many other methods...but somehow you have to get a grip on this ring to unscrew it -- or obtain VAG-Tool 3778984-A12-Fuel-Ring-Unscrew-Tool-21B. ;-) It threads off counterclockwise just like a standard thread.
4. Now you just pull up on it, then tilt it and rotate the entire assembly one way or the other while lifting it out.
I wrestled with mine for a while before realizing that the fuel level float tube is the first thing that must come out. And at that point, I had already done everything in step 2 and 3, so I had to find a way to grip the assembly while turning the white cap.
Once the assembly is out, it's relatively obvious how to disassemble it the rest of the way, if you want to take out just the 4" pump. Mine seems to have some foreign matter in it causing it to jam. I can make it come on and pump, but then it jams again. I think I'm going to need a new one, so if you can get yours out, I could use it. Please let me know.

I know you said it was hit in the front but would you happen to have the plastic washer surround and are they salvagable. When I bought mine the previous owner had the timing belt done and they must of forgot to put them back on so I have the washer nozzles with a huge hole where the trim should be.

Sorry, but the front end was crashed badly and all the parts that were on the road were trashed, only the parts that still were attached to the car survived!!
