My take from afar:I'd do a transmission service per Audipages, with a bottle of red Lubegard added.
I'm convinced it bought me another 10-12,000 miles, before my rebuild.
Find an indy Audi shop, and print out and discuss the procedure with the tech.
Click the A8 line in my sig to get to Audipages, to find the procedure.

Hi,
does it still change gear ok ??
if so it "may" be the same issue i had,
the alternator was failing and could not deliver sufficient voltage and the gearbox ECU didn't like it, hence it went into safe mode, but would drive perfectly normal.
Just another option to check and consider....

I'll second the use of Red Lubeguard...
Without a service, mine got considerably better after adding it. That was about 10 months and about 15,000 miles ago.
