Default 2000 A8 starts then stops when cold....

For many years, in certain temperatures, the A8 would start and die immediately when starting for the first time in a day.

It starts, revs up a little, then dies. Occasionally it starts and then revs up, then the RPMs go low, then it revs up on its own. The car will just rev over and over by itself as if I were reving it, but I am doing nothing.

However, if I feathered a little throttle, I could keep it running. After it gets running a bit, it is fine for the rest of the day, even if I park for hours. It still does the rev thing at the beginning.

But today, it reved up, then died and would not allow me to feather the throttle. But after like 30 tries, it finally started.

Any ideas? It is now becoming a big problem.

Thanks

Could this have started after a battery disconnection or dead (or near dead) battery event?

Could be a throttle body adaptation (alignment) needed...sometimes possible to do without VagCom, but often not.

Need to read the codes and look at this >>>

It seems to me that it would be some kind of sensor. It only happens on the first start of the day. Once I get the car started, the rest of the day it starts normally.

Could it be that a sensor is telling the car that the engine is "warm" when it really isn't?

And, it only happens in certain temperatures. If it is REALLY REALLY cold, no problem. If it is hot outside, no problem.

I will check the codes.

Well I am looking at the code 17978 Engine Start blocked by immobilizer. When I originally searched this online yesterday, it said US Audi A8's did not have immobilizers. Do we have immobilizers on the 2000 A8?

Yes, US FL (2000 and up) have "gen 3" immobilizers.

Plus 2 of those codes are throttle valve codes and one for idle control...and a couple for MAF problems...all of which could cause bad idle or stalling.

Throttle valve codes scream for alignment/adaptation, IF it's not failed part in the throttle valve.

A failed temp sensor could cause overly rich or lean conditions at the right temps...and wouldn't necessarily show up on your gauge. It's a double sensor...one for the gauge and one for the ECM fuel mixture adjustment...commonly one can fail, while the other is good.

I'd clear all codes (if you didn't the immobilizer could be old and unrelated to the idle problem) and go through at least 2 driving cycles or until you get the bad idle again...then read the codes.

Ok, here are my codes below. The starting problem was definitely the immobilizer, as I remember that key in the car icon being on. That is a separate problem than the rev at starting problem that the car has had.

I cleared the codes. Do you recommend that I reset the throttle body?

Also who knows what fails on the immobilizer? I read that there was a wire in the steering wheel that needs replacing? I figure I might order that part now just so I have it.

Thanks for your help.
