2000 A8 vs. 2001 S4

If I could have an S8 in stick legally in the US or a 3.3TDI stick I would be in an A8/S8 right now.
S4 is a rare bird, A8/S8 is even more rare. S4 is a great car dont get me wrong. Tons and tons of tuning/money pit potential. Guys running mid 11 second quarter mile times consistantly.(the well tuned stage 4 guys) A well tuned S4 will whoops up on a stock S8 US spec. You find a stick S8 with a hoenhester twin turbo kit and the only thing an S4 will see is tail lights.

my 2cents
I owned an 01 S4 until a tree fell right across the roof and totaled it. Now I own an 02 S8.
I can tell you that my chipped six-speed S4 was faster than the S8. Wicked fast. The S8 is effortless to go fast, beautifully smooth, and elegant. The S4 just felt wicked fast. Keep in mind that I live at 6500 feet elevation, so the turbos really make a difference up here...
The build quality of the 8 series is miles above the 4 series - not even close. Much more solid, more noise isolation, more refined. You get what you pay for. The 8 is a big car, but it doesn't feel big. I think the 8 weighs about 350 pounds more than the S4.
Overall, I describe the S8 as effortless and smooth. I feel like a King driving it. The S4 I'd say was more fun, I felt like a kid (rich kid?) driving it. To me, the 8 is the way to go.

I have an 00 S4 and a 97 A8...
But I'm no expert.
The S4 is a sporty car, and becomes a sports car with the readily-available mods. I can make the tires squeal out of any corner and can beat most other cars from stoplights if the need arises. They are a hair delicate as the turbos that ship on them stock (K03s) are fragile and require a proper warm-up/cool-down period for long life. (This topic in and of itself is rife with debate. You just can't be too wreckless with it.)
If you want a fast cruiser with tremendous luxury, go for the A8. It is fast, has plenty of torque for passing and is only 200-400 lbs heavier than the S4. It can comfortably fit a lot of people or stolen goods (nee Ronin.) It doesn't have the mods or tweak factor the S4 does, but between PaulW and the rest of the gang here, we can do and have done lots of neat things to the A8s.
