Default 2001 S8 Quattro and Changing Tires

I have done quite a bit of searching but still can't seem to find the real answer to my question:

Do you really have to change out all 4 tires (with the Audi Quattro system)at the same time when replacing one or two tires with the exact same new tire and same size/specs?

My front 2 (Hankook Ventus 245/45 18)tires wore out on the inside due to bad alignment. I replaced these 2 with new tires (exactly the same brand/tire/size). The back two tires have about 12K miles; maybe 50% left.

My Audi mechanic says it is not an issue to put on only 2 new tires and will not effect the Quattro system. The owners manual is vague, but seems to contradict this. One tire shop says it's it will not effect the Quattro, where another says check with the dealer.

Have any of you experienced this dilema and what is the real answer(s)?

Thanks!

Default w/ only 12k mi on the rear, you should be fine. If you want to be scientific, measure tread depth

on old vs. new and see if there's any difference. 1-2psi of tire pressure differential would probably make more of a difference than minimal wear.
