I have some input on this subject...... after having one rebuilt and maintained two others.....
If you're planing on keeping the car for a while the filter is going to clog at some point. So, here is what I would do if you feel that you are getting a late start:
I think you should change the filter, but not all the fluid.
Re-use most of the old fluid and top it off with fresh fluid. Reasoning for this is that the new fluid has lots of detergents in it and it could be to much of a good thing for the tranny. (Sludge could come loose and clog up passages)
And make sure it's refilled correctly!!!!!
At the end of the day I believe that the number one reason for tranny failure after recent tranny fluid/filter change is improper refill!!
