The Sport steering wheel of 01/02 had no radio controls, just tip controls if I recall. The 03 steering wheel was the comfort style with the stereo controls added, but no more "fat" sport look.

I have the 2002 Audi S8 in Silver exterior and Black interior with Alcantara inserts. Tiptronic +/- buttons are on the wheel, there is also a choice of standard automatic, sport mode automatic, or tiptronic using the "paddles/buttons" Great fun, and very quick acceleration. There is an in dash 6 CD changer, with very good "Symphony" sound. I have 19 inch wheels and 255/40 Ultra Sport All Season tires which make the ride a bit rougher, but have amazing grip.
So far it has been an absolutely wonderful car, but I only have 24,000 miles on mine.

The thing that put the '03 over the top for me was the interior trim color. The '01/'02 and the Avus silver '03 all have what I would describe as drab brown trim. The '03 Black and '03 Ming Blue have what I would describe as more beautiful natural wood trim. All a matter of taste. The '01 & '02 wheels are the same but the '03 has the updated version, I obviously preferred the '03's. The sport mode tranny was a must for me, thus the '01 was out right away. Good luck, happy hunting..post pics when you get the deal done!!!

Might recommend an Audi certified vehicle, having the '03 with another years worth of coverage was comforting. You will love it, I haven't had a single regret and honestly want for nothing more car wise. If mine were totaled I would look for another one immediately, wouldn't want anything else, it's got it all.

Based on supply & demand on trading fora, I wouldn't be surprised if 300 total was the correct figure, but I'm a bit hard pressed to believe the US-bound S8 was THAT exclusive!
