Default 2002 S8, 300k+ Miles. Am I crazy?

I’ve seen this S8 listed for $3.5k and have had an overwhelming itch to purchase it. Considering the service history, it’s been extremely well kept and has had one owner. Apparently the new dealer has done a full service on it and let’s hypothetically say that includes the timing belt, etc. Is it really worth it to get them to give me a dirt cheap price or should I just let it go and look for one that has less miles and has a ****tier service history?

i definitely would not do it. the s8 is not that amazing of a car to warrant that kind of deal. i mean, yeah, if u found a ferrari f355 for that kind of bargain, go for it to have the experience of owning a ferrari. but for an s8? no, it's just stupid. after a couple weeks you'll feel like an idiot.

Agree, get something newer or w less miles. I can only imagine the components that are going to need to be replaced.

Meh. I bought mine with 200k miles on it.
Most important thing is the trans replacement history.

If you can do all the work yourself (have a lift?), you don't have to pay the stealership for exorbitantly expensive work. But I don't know if your price is so good.

If I was buying it I'd either just drive it until it quit, or I'd do the cam chains and adjuster pads, valve springs, timing belt service, Bufkin pipe, etc.

It's hard to find the point where it stops making sense to fix these things. Witness my recent trans rebuild (over $3k):

Car value with broken trans, 243k miles but good condition: $2k (?)
Car value with newly rebuilt (by ZF center) transmission: $5k (?)

Hard to argue that I skip the repair with those numbers.
BTW - does anyone disagree with my value estimates? Love to hear differing point of view.

Meh. I bought mine for slightly more money (about $4k) with slightly less miles (222k). I would do it again. As mentioned, the only thing that would concern me is the transmission. Does it have documented history of being maintained or replaced? If so, then go for it. If not, then go into it thinking that it'll need a rebuild at some point.

These cars last a very long time if well maintained.. I hit 370,000 miles a few days ago and it runs and drives like it has less than 50k on it.
That being said, I've overhauled a LOT of items and am quite meticulous.

For the price you might be okay, but it's a bit high IMO without a documented recent transmission replacement.
