Default 2003 S8 w/ 53K miles - good deal?

I posted this on the D3 forum and got a great response from PaulW, but I then realized that I may not have been posting to the correct forum, so if this is a mistake I apologize in advance!

The deal seems almost too good to be true. Any general comments on the long-term reliability of the car? I've never bought a used car with that many miles on it before and I'm used to Audis (I currently drive an 04 allroad and owned a 96 A4 previously) but still I'm a little concerned, maybe I'm just not used to buying cars with that many miles (or maybe that's NOT that many miles). Car is being sold by a VW dealer and carfax says one owner - the car has the local Audi dealer's name on the back so I think it was always a local car. Obviously it's out of warranty which is why I'm even more concerned. Anyone's thoughts? Thanks a lot for the help!

Default I thought it was a D3 not a D2

Been looking at too many cars lately.

The S8 doesn't have many problems, but it won't be maintenance free.

Most of the problems have procedures already on audipages.com or we can help here.

Default I think 53K for the D2 chassis is pretty low. S8s and facelift in general are more reliable because

they are newer for one, and a lot of changes were made to the transmission (weakness). The S8 transmission so far, I believe have been fine. I have 185K on my 97. I put some money into some repairs, but nothing compared to the mileage I've gotten out of it.

If you are not a DIY type of an owner, there are many aftermarket warrantees that cover pretty well.

One factor of these cars compared to a model such as an A4 is that its usually not subjected to adolescent drivers. People who buy these cars new take care of them.

Paul, I was wrong - it is a D2.

Default 2002 S8 with a new tranny

I can say with a year's worth of experience that it should be pretty solid, other than the tranny they had to put in at about 55k miles. I have 69k miles now but mine is CPO to 100k so I have a saftey net.

Unless its CPO'd to 100k miles I would be a little wary

Again, I am in the same position, looking at an S8 with 60K, CPO to 100K, so for the next 2-3 years for me, I would have a safety net as well...But I am concerned with timing belt, tranny issues, etc., and not sure what would be covered under the CPO? Anyone have details on what is covered with major costs?
